Diversity Training for Colleges and Universities

Uncovering Implicit Bias

The social landscape of racial and color-based discrimination has evolved and become more complex, meaning diversity training programs must cover more topics than ever before. Studies and statistics further illustrate the pervasive, subtle and damaging quality of implicit bias (also known as unconscious bias) in the workplace. The EEOC is requiring employers to become more astute about how they hire people and in analyzing all terms and conditions of employment, putting even greater pressure on colleges and universities to provide diversity courses to prevent discrimination and harassment. This cultural diversity training course teaches employees what implicit bias is and helps them understand its effects in the workplace.

Implicit Bias and Diversity Programs

Implicit: im•plic•it, adj., implied though not plainly expressed.

Bias: bīəs, noun, prejudice in favor of or against a person, group or thing.

Ask anyone if they’re prejudiced and their response will be “no” – that they’re forward thinkers without bias. But we all have biases: some based on fear of the unknown, some on traumatizing experience, others are culturally ingrained, yet others are so subtle we don’t know they exist. Everyone has biases, whether they are aware of them or not.

Standard Diversity Training Courses Don't Cover Implicit Bias

Two resumes cross your desk, the candidates equally qualified. Do you gravitate toward the one with the more easily pronounceable name, the one that graduated from your Alma Mater, or the one whose gender is the same as yours? These are the types of subtle examples of workplace bias outlined in the Uncovering Implicit Bias cultural diversity training module.

When Implicit Bias Impacts Higher Education

High quality diversity programs are more important than ever as the landscape for employers continues to evolve to include a more diverse talent pool than ever before. Educational Institutions are experiencing greater regulatory pressure to analyze and expand their lawful hiring practices. Bias in the workplace can no longer be tolerated, but the challenge for employers can be larger than getting staff to overcome their biases: it’s often getting them to admit to bias in the first place.

Robust diversity programs that include training on implicit bias can help your staff understand how pervasive bias is in the workforce today. Campus Answers’ cultural diversity training provides eye-opening studies and statistics about the prevalence of implicit bias and its damaging effects. Our diversity courses explore the differences between impact and intent, and examine how supervisors may unknowingly expose their company to risk.
